The Printable Concept was founded with the ambitious objective to create high quality, iconic artworks and make them accessible everywhere in the world. Selling our artworks as printables let us do exactly that. You can choose any of your favourite artwork from the shop, add them to your cart and have them hung on your walls in a matter of minutes. To make sure your art looks beautiful once printed- and to make your life a little easier- we've assembled a few recommendations.
Here's our step by step guide on how to print your printables:
What is a printable?
A printable is an artwork that you can purchase online and that you will receive as a downloadable digital file, most-commonly in JPG, PNG or PDF format. You can then print your new artwork directly from your home printer, or for more professional results, arrange to have it printed in your local print shop. It is a new and revolutionary way to buy art, which holds many advantages, including their accessibility, affordability. They are so affordable you can update your gallery wall with every new season and revamp your decor whenever you feel like a change.
Downloading your printables
When you purchase a printable from
The Printable Cøncept, it becomes available to download directly from the checkout page, as soon as your payment is confirmed.
We will also send you a download notification email inviting you to download your new printable wall art. You will receive different files of the same artwork compressed in a .zip file.
What is a .zip file and how do I open it?
A .zip file is a collection of one or more files, which are compressed into a single file for easy transportation and compression. Most of our artworks come in different aspect ratios so we compress them into a single .zip file. To open the .zip file and have access to your printables, double-click on it and let your computer show you the folders and files contained inside. In most operating systems, including Windows and Mac OS, ZIP files are handled internally, without the need for any extra software. If you do however need an archive manager software or application, a lot of free ones are available, such as WinRAR,
PeaZip, and
iZIP. These applications also have a free version for iPhones and Androids, allowing you to unzip files from your cellphone.
What is an aspect ratio?
In order to save you all the work of having to crop your files to fit your frame, and to avoid any distortion while printing, our printables all come in different aspect ratios. All you need to do is select the correct one to fit your frame. We know not everyone is like us, working with prints from morning until evening, and we understand some of our customers are having trouble understanding aspect ratio and how this applies to prints. Let us try to explain: simply put, an aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image. For example, if you want to print your printable to fit a 50x70cm frame, you need to choose the 5x7 aspect ratio file. Or, if you want your print to measure 24x36in, you need to use the 2x3 aspect ratio file.
Our printables come in aspect ratios that match the most popular s
tandard frame sizes: 2x3, 3x4, 5x7, A (ISO), and 4x5. There is a simple formula for calculating aspect ratios: Aspect Ratio = Width / Height. But we don't want you to worry to much about the math behind it, so here's a guide of 5 aspect ratios and their respective popular poster sizes.
2x3: 12x18in ; 16x24in ; 20x30cm ; 24x36in
3x4: 12x16in ; 18x24in ; 30x40cm
5x7: 10x14in ; 20x28in ; 50x70cm
A: All ISO sizes: A8, A7, A6, A5, A4, A3
4x5: 8x10in ; 16x20in ; 24x30in
Resolution and DPI
Unless stated otherwise in the description, our printables all are ready to print in a 24x36in / 70x100cm size with 300DPI. DPI stands for the number of dots in a printed inch, it is used to determine an image resolution. Basically, the more dots the higher the quality of the print, thus the more sharpness and details. 300dpi is the optimal size for a clear and crisp picture. Any image printed with less than 150dpi will look pixelated and blurry.
For a high quality print, the quality of paper is very important. We recommend printing your printables on a thick and heavy cardstock paper, with a minimum weight of 230gsm. Printing on a heavy paper is important as it will give your print rigidity, hence preventing curling and warping. We also recommend a matte finishing, especially for artworks and typography prints, as they create a smoother look. We do not recommend using shinny photo paper as they reflect light and are shiny.
Here's a close-up of the premium matte paper we use for our
Art Prints.
What kind of ink should you use to print your printables?
For the most professional results, it is best to use pigment-based inks as they last much longer than dye inks. The pigments are made of extremely small particles which sit on the paper and bond with the fibres. They are also waterproof and chemical free. In our opinion, if you want your printable artworks to be gallery quality, pigment based ink is a must.
As a reference, all our
art prints are printed on a beautiful and heavy matte paper, with high quality archival inks (piment-based). If you have any questions on how to print your printables, do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to help you achieve beautiful results with your artworks.
Where to have your printables printed?
If you don't want to print your printables at home you can have them printed at your local print shop or some online printing service. As long as you make sure to choose a heavy, high-quality paper. Paper quality makes a enormous difference- believe me! If you are in the USA or Canada, you can have your printables printed at Staples, Walmart, or Fedex printing services. We also sell all our designs printed, as art print and shipped in a sturdy kraft tube in the print shop. We ship worldwide.
